Richard Juhlin 98/100
This is a regal and heroic Bollinger characterized by restrained power and energetic energy. I love meeting this untouched force and carefully analysing its sublime elements, but at the same time I have to admit that we are dealing with a real "vin de garde" that will not reach its maximum capacity before its 25th birthday. The structure is impressive, based of course on the high acidity of the vintage in the first place. This very high acid means that the other building blocks can appear as subordinate, but they have a great wealth of both oak embossed secondary aromas and flaunted dark fruit. At present, the aromatic spectrum is characterized by fresh hazelnuts from Piedmont, green apples, critical minerals and perfumed orange blossoms. Buy a box and follow its aromatic journey to heaven. The 2008 is a blend of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay sourced form 18 crus: mainly Aÿ and Verzenay for the Pinot Noir, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant for the Chardonnay.
The remarkable maturity of the grapes in 2008 combined with a phenomenal acidity have produced a wine of infinite depth and allowed an exceptional vintage to be created. Bollinger have matured and aged this vintage for more than twice the time required by the Appellation regulations to allow it to integrate and start to show at it's best. Dosage 8 grams per litre.
La Grande Année is the embodiment of the carefully preserved traditional expertise of the Bollinger Champagne House. The wine is exclusively vinified in small aged oak barrels. Bollinger has never abandoned this traditional craft method, which helps develop aromas of great finesse. After a prolonged ageing on its lees, every bottle of La Grande Année is riddled and disgorged by hand.
