2018 Sauvignon Blanc, Kumeu River, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
The Kumeu River Sauvignon from Rays Road in Hawkes Bays' very flinty, with lime-juice aromas and salty minerality. It is texturally layered and complex, but with an angular, tangy dry finish. It is the ideal wine to drink with oysters, or most shellfish and seafood for that matter. No doubt this will also suit the fresh goat cheeses that famously pair well with Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé.
A new project for the Brajkovich family. Being located within easy reach of Auckland is putting pressure on land values for Kumeu and there is a distinct prospect that some of the farmers from who they rent vineyards will succumb to the lure of loot for redevelopment. The estates icon vineyards are safely owned by the family, but vineyards from which they currently source contract fruit for some of the junior cuveés could well become building plots in the not too distant future. To mitigate this the family have purchased a large property in Hawkes Bay that is currently planted with Sauvignon Blanc. The family have done the soil analysis and are excited with the prospect of re-planting extensively with Chardonnay whilst also retaining the pick of the Sauvignon Blanc. It is a long term project but in taking on this challenge the family have secured a future supply of fine quality fruit - that will be for all our benefit!
