2017 Ch Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Classé, St Estèphe 6x75cl

In Bond per 6x75cl ex vat

Tasting Notes

"Neal Martin 93/100
The 2017 Calon-Ségur was bottled at the beginning of July 2019. This is clearly more intense and complex than the Marquis de Calon with blackberry, bilberry, traces of brine and discrete tobacco aromas. Classic in style with the Cabernet component clearly more expressive than previous vintages (a long-term policy as they reconfigure vineyard planting). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and superb balance. There is a natural and effortless feel to this nascent Calon-Ségur, very focused with a "cool" and slightly reserved finish. Classy and, dare I say, it represents one of the few 2017s that may challenge its 2018 counterpart. Vinous Feb 2020

Vineyard Information

Château Calon-Ségur is the most northerly of the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés. The former owner, Marquis de Ségur who also owned Lafite and Latour, declared that his heart belonged to Calon, hence the heart which features on the label. For the last century it has been owned by the Gasqueton family. In 2012, the Gasqueton family sold Château Calon Ségur and Château Capbern to Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group. Jean-Pierre Denis, its chairman, formed a partnership with Jean-François Moueix and his son Jean, the owners of the Videlot group. Together they have conducted renovation works with outstanding results.

The partly-walled vineyard covers 74 hectares and is planted on deep gravel beds with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The wine is matured in oak barrels (40% new) for 18 months.
