The 2018 Les Hauts-Conseillants is a bit nervy today relative to how it showed in barrel. Lifted aromatics and mid-weight structure give this open-knit Lalande de Pomerol a good deal of near and medium-term appeal. The tannins are a bit edgy, but otherwise, this is a fine effort. Planted in the 1970's by the Figeac-Bourotte family, Les Hauts-Conseillants vineyard now has an average age in excess of 30+ years. The 10 hectares are divided between 6 ha of sandy-clay topsoil, with free draining gravelly subsoil (Chevrol plateau in Néac), and 4 ha on a gravelly outcrop that contains 10% clay (in Lalande). Planted 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.
