2018 Ch Capbern, Cru Bourgeois, St Estèphe

En Primeur In Bond ex vat

Tasting Notes

"Antonio Galloni 90-92/100
The 2018 Capbern is expressive, nuanced and inviting, with lovely upfront fruit. In 2018, Capbern is a bit compact and tightly wound, but it also has a good deal of persistence. The Cabernet is quite marked in the 2018, which is not a bad thing, it just means the wine is going to need time to be at its best. What really stands out, though, is the push and pull between the bright aromatics that this cool, clay-rich soil helped give in 2018, and the ripe, radiant fruit of the warm summer. That interplay makes for an absolutely compelling wine. Red cherry fruit, mint, dried flowers, cedar and tobacco add aromatic nuance to this highly expressive, vibrant Saint-Estèphe. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Tasted two times. Vinous.com, May 2019

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Advocate 91-93/100
The 2018 Capbern is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and comes in at 14.6% alcohol. It's anticipated to age for 16 months in barriques, 60% new. Deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant scents of black raspberries, kirsch and fresh blackcurrants with nuances of cedar chest, pencil lead and forest floor plus a waft of lavender. Full-bodied, rich and packed with juicy fruit, it has a firm line of grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing with an herbal lift. April 2019

Vineyard Information

TheWineCellarInsider.com;
The modern era for the chateau began July 2012 when Chateau Capbern Gasqueton and Chateau Calon were sold to the large French Insurance company, Suravenir Insurance. Starting with the 2013 vintage, they dropped the second part of their name and began selling their wine under the simpler name of just Chateau Capbern.

One of the first moves the new owners made was to hire Laurent Dufau, who quickly turned things around. In 2014, Chateau Capbern Gasqueton produced the best wine in the history of the estate.

The 33 hectare Medoc vineyard of Chateau Capbern is planted to 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. The terroir is a mix of gravel, clay, and chalky soils. On average, the vines are close to 20 years of age. The vineyards are located in two different areas with slightly different terroirs. One part of the vineyard is situated not far from Calon Segur and Chateau Phelan Segur. The other section is closer to the Gironde river, close to Chateau Meyney. The wine is aged in close to 60% new, French oak barrels for 18 months.
