2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Domaine Joseph Faiveley

Tasting Notes

"Deep hue with dark powerful fruit and plenty of structure showing on the bouquet, the tannins need time to settle and integrate but balance is excellent with fine texture and great length."

Vineyard Information

In 2007 Erwan Faiveley took over the reins of the firm from his father Francois and the generational change has had an electrifying effect on the company. Investment has been made across the company in the form of new vineyard holdings, updated winemaking equipment and replacement of tired old barrels with high quality new oak. Over the past 6 years the team have really found their feet and the quality here is striking – this is not wine made to a recipe, there is a proper respect for the character of each appellation and the wines are a joy to drink.

Domaine Faiveley traces its history back to 1823 and through seven generations they have built up an exceptional vineyard portfolio including 50 hectares in Côte de Nuits, 15 in Côte de Beaune and 75 in Côte Chalonnaise. Indeed the latest addition of 20 ha in Gevrey Chambertin was added as recently as October 2013.

Vintage Description

Faiveley’s vintage report reflects that the vines remained in perfect health throughout the growing season, akin to 2015 and 2016, with a bonus of the largest crop of Pinot for 5 years. They compare the style of their reds to 2007 (very successful at Faiveley), but with more flesh on the palate. The whites are outstanding, rich concentrated, opulent and aromatic with fine acidity giving wonderful energy. A super vintage at this excellent address.
