2023 Babylonstoren Nebukadnesar, Stellenbosch

Tasting Notes

"This is a quintessential South African Bordeaux blend and the flagship wine of Babylonstoren.

Wondrous graphite and cedar element which seamlessly incorporates every other component – brambles, spiced black cherries, blueberries, plums, origanum, thyme, fresh walnuts and a beautiful floral element of violets and pansies. The velvety tannins produce ripples of sappy freshness and bring texture and context to the fruit; sleek, supple and sinuous. This opulent wine befits its royal name and has all the attributes of greatness. Deceptively easy to drink now but will grow in stature and complexity over the next ten years.

Vintage Description

Made up of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 13.5% Petit Verdot, and 0.5% Malbec, previous vintages of this wine have raked in a number of awards. This includes a Gran D'Or at the Michelangelo Awards 2016, a double platinum from the National Wine Challenge, and a gold from the 2016 Vitis Vinifera awards – it’s no wonder the Nebukadnesar was counted as one of the top 100 wines in South Africa for 2016.

All the wines were made separately and matured in new French oak barrels for 23 months, then blended and left in a tank for a month to marry before being bottled and matured for five months prior to release.
