"93/100 Michaela Morris, Decanter Magazine
Proprietor Katia Nussbaum says the estate’s northern, clay-based vineyard suffered a bit more hydric stress in 2020 than the Helichrysum plots in Montalcino’s southeast. The former was harvested in the last week of September stress-free around the rainfall. Engagingly fragrant, it features tobacco, pine forest and dark red cherry aromas, with bitter medicinal herbs and bergamot showing up on the toothsome palate. Sturdy in build, this is supported by terracotta-like tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2026-2035."
Richard visited this renowned estate in the summer of 2019 and was extremely impressed by the rich, powerful wines. Luigi Fabbro and Katia Nuassbaum founded San Polino 30 years ago, and have long been advocates of Organic and biodynamic practices, he drive and energy they exude gives just a hint of the connection they have with the land and soil and the determination to make the most authentic wines possible from their tiny 4 hectare estate.
The vineyards are to the north-east of Montalcino at 300m altitude. Worked by hand, organically and biodynamically, the canopy is well-managed to produce healthy, juicy, thick-skinned grapes
