2011 Ch Romassan Rouge, Bandol, Domaines Ott

Vineyard Information

Domaines Ott was founded in 1912 by Marcel Ott, an agricultural engineer from Alsace who dreamed of establishing a great wine estate near the Mediterranean.

Today, the three wineries (Clos Mireille, Ch Romasson and Ch de Selle) are owned and managed by Champagne Louis Roederer and produce some of the world’s most prestigious wines, but particularly rosé wines, made at distinctively different estates in Bandol and Côtes de Provence appellations.

Château Romassan was purcased by the Ott family in 1956 and over time has been entirely replanted, the small one- and two-hectare plots were reorganized and levelled to create both espalier and terraced vineyards. The lovely eighteenth-century Chateau that overlooks the estate has also been completely renovated.

Located in the heart of the famous winegrowing region of Bandol, Mourvèdre is the estate's major grape variety. Indigenous to the area, it is particularly suited to the arid climate and sparse soil. Mourvedre produces robust wines that have great lenght on the palate and great longevity in the wine cellar. Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah are also grown in smaller quantities. The vines have an average age of 25 across the 70 hectares that are planted. The estate's distinctive soils are composed of limestone, sandstone and marl and sustained by gravel.

This unique soil, together with a sun-drenched and particularly dry microclimate, produces elaborate and very powerful wines that are suitable for laying down.
