2014 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri IGT

Tasting Notes

"Monica Larner (Robert Parker) 92-94/100
Tasted from barrel, the 2014 Bolgheri Sassicaia is shaping up very nicely since I tasted it last year. In fact, it has made reassuring gains in terms of color density, aromatic definition and specifically textural richness. This wine will be released in 2017, but is scheduled to be bottled in November of this year (instead of January 2017) in order to allow it more time to flesh out and integrate in glass. The bouquet shows slightly rustic tones of tilled earth and spice that come on the heels of blackberry and dried cherry. The 2014 vintage is characterized by a late growing cycle. The last day of harvest was October 31. Despite the vintage challenges, primary fermentation and malolactic fermentation were executed without a hitch. Reviewed July 2016

John Stimpfig, Decanter Magazine 93/100
Relatively pale and limpid, this has a hauntingly beautiful aromatic quality of lilies, violet, cassis and cherry, which in sum is utterly beguiling. In the mouth it is demure and delicious with bright succulent acidity and an almost Burgundian sweetness and structure, replete with filigree tannins. Here the fruit is youthful raspberries and red berries with a hint of savoury graphite and violet. In comparison to other, more broad shouldered, Sassicaia vintages such as the 2012, this is altogether more delicate and lacy, yet still retains great length and precision. This is not a Sassicaia for the ultra long haul and is so precociously good and drinkable now that it will take some resistance not to pull the cork sooner rather than later. That said, it would easily repay another decade in bottle. February 2017

Vineyard Information

In the 1940s, a project of passion was born when the truly visionary Marchese Mario Incisa Della Rochetta realised the vast potential of Bordeaux varieties in Bolgheri, a coastal area of Tuscany previously unknown for its wine production. This project was honed over twenty years and only shared with close friends and neighbours at the time. However, the great quality on display could not be kept a secret forever and eventually under immense pressure from their peers the family released the first commercial vintage of Sassicaia in 1968. Since then, accolades and acclaim have followed one of the most profound Cabernet dominant wines in the world to become the flagship Super Tuscan, and arguably Italy’s most important wine.
