Called Lamothe-d'Assault until 1814, the vineyard was split into several holdings, with the largest part acquired by Philippe and Jacques Guignard in 1981.
Lamothe-Guignard sits on a combination of soils, some on a gravelly plateau, whilst the best sites are on north and north west facing gravel and chalk slopes of the Ciron Valley. It is the humidity from the Ciron river which assists the formation of the essential "noble rot".
