The ZAHEL family winery has a long and proud history in Vienna and their winemaking very much preserves and builds upon that history. They produce a number of different Gemischter Satz, and the Wiener feels typically Austrian for example (yes, we did write that) whilst the Nussberg has distinctly more weight and feels more Burgundian in style. They also produce a truly enticing range of wines which started out as experimental bottlings but which now make up a regular, though individually very limited, part of his range.
Zahel are both organic and Demter biodynamic certified across all 95 parcels within the city limits of Vienna. In early 2024, Zahel became Europe’s first Regenerative Organic Certified Winery, taking the idea of “sustainability” a step further — as opposed to sustaining or maintaining the status quo, the Regenerative Organic Alliance (ROA) stresses the importance of rehabilitating soils and ecosystems for a healthier environmental future, as well as demanding a higher degree social fairness amongst employees and in the agricultural industry at large. Alex and the team feel strongly that these practices not only produce better wine but will allow their vineyards and community to thrive for generations to come.
