Southern Right was founded in 1994 by Anthony Hamilton Russell. Hamilton Russell was the first wine estate planted in Walker Bay, founded by Anthony's father Tim Hamilton Russell in 1975. It became famous for the elegant, almost Burgundian, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that was produced in the cooler maritime climate. Sourthern Right is a small Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc specialist located on a 448ha property in the cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley just behind Hermanus. The vines are grown on low-vigour, stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soils in cool sites.
