The 2022 Riesling Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett has a touch of crushed wild thyme on the nose. The palate is all lemony, vividness, and light, with a mid-palate still harboring much carbon dioxide, only adding to the general levity. The finish is of absolutely mouth-watering, ripe lemon. Dr. Loosen needs no introduction. Few have done more to raise the profile of German Riesling than the ever-energetic, ever-articulate Erni Loosen. Since he took over in 1987, the house has developed into a significant player across all quality levels, and his widely distributed entry-level wines are global references for the Mosel style. The admirable thing is that the top wines really are the top. With holdings of 85 hectares in total, not all of which are in full production yet due to new planting or re-planting, the Loosen site portfolio is impressive. It includes parcels in such stellar sites as Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen and Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Domprobst and Himmelreich. Since Erni Loosen took over, cellar master Bernhard Schug has been at his side.
Loosen’s dry wines have a vivid balance, as do his off-dry and sweet wines that shine with restrained sweetness. The 2022 harvest started in mid-September with a pre-harvest and continued into late October.
