Tasting Notes

"James Suckling 93-94/100
A polished and in-check red with blackberry, dark-chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. It has a medium body, creamy and round tannins and a savory finish. Well done for this estate.

Aidan Bell
Deep thick colour, spicy and ripe. Intense flavour, very bright fruit with creamy texture and very ripe tannins, plenty of body here, rich and generous with lovely freshness, violets on the palate, very good length, rounded and juicy. 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 17% Petit Verdot
"

Vineyard Information

Home to the Sichel family since 1961, Château Angludet is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc, with a history which goes back to the twelfth century. It is named after Bertrand d'Angludet, a knight and lord of the noble residence which stood on this site in 1150.

Since 1758, the vineyard of Château Angludet has retained a configuration down the centuries which is very close to the original, 93 percent of the current surface area having nurtured vines for more than 250 years – exceptional continuity for a vineyard.

Situated on a plateau of Garonne gravel, the vineyard overlooks the low terraces of the Gironde estuary. The gravely, sandy soil has good drainage, fostering concentration, finesse and elegance in the wines.

Managed today by Benjamin Sichel, the vineyard of Château Angludet covers a surface area of 32 hectares, all within the AOC Margaux winegrowing area and planted with 46 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 41 percent Merlot and 13 percent Petit Verdot. The relatively large proportion of Petit Verdot demands hard work but imparts depth and richness to the wine.

Vintage Description

Benjamin Sichel; Late pruning of the vines helped them avoid the frost of early April. Overall 2023 was hot but not excessively so, it was surprising to see from the weather reports that the sum of temperatures until the end of July was equivalent to the 2022 vintage which was one of the hottest ever known. The weather felt very different with less stifling heat. The days were cooler but the night temperatures remained high. Storms watered the vines in small quantities, which kept them fresh. At the end of the season high temperatures arrived, more than 35 degrees until mid-October. Thanks to the restrictive water context, the tannins have acquired the maturity of long-lasting wines. The balance of amphorae and barrels allows us to experience the freshness and fruit we are looking for in this vintage. The excellent result convinces us of the great capacity of nature to adapt.
