Tasting Notes

"Neal Martin, Vinous.com 95 Points
The 2002 Musigny Grand Cru is slightly paler than the 2007. It has an exquisite nose of pressed rose petals plus hints of clove and sous-bois. The palate is beautifully balanced, presenting a mélange of red and black fruit and traces of tobacco, and becoming fleshier and grippier toward the finish. Maybe not a showstopper like the 1999, but a really gorgeous wine. Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London. Drink 2020-2040 Reviewed 26.10.2020

Allen Meadows, Burghound.com 94 Points
The highly expressive and spicy nose mixes both primary and second fruit characters with those of Asian-style spice and floral elements. The velvety, concentrated and magnificently rich flavors possess plenty of minerality as well as focused power on the superbly persistent finale. This exceptionally elegant effort oozes breed and while it is still positively developing, it's not so far away that it couldn't be enjoyed now if. Tasted multiple times over the years with reliable results. Try from 2022+ Reviewed in 2017

Vintage Description

Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, April 2004
Philippe Drouhin and resident enologist Laurence Jobard described the 2002 vintage as "one of those vintages where almost everything was easy, except perhaps for a bit of anxiety at the appearance of some rot at the end of August. Thankfully, the north wind appeared, dried up the rot and concentrated the fruit. However, there was just enough rot tinge where we thought it best to sort out those bunches. We had excellent ripeness and high sugars and thus, there was very little chaptalization. The malos were extended and we elected to rack when they finished. The wines are also on the tender side and thus we decided to bottle a bit earlier than usual as we felt there was no further benefit to be had and there was the risk of some wines drying out if left in cask and almost everything was in bottle by December". Overall, as the scores suggest, this is an outstanding vintage for Drouhin and perhaps even a bit better across the board than 2001.
