Tasting Notes

"Neal Martin, vinous.com 94 Points
The 2009 Rauzan-Ségla has a very fine bouquet with tightly packed blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, melted tar and pencil shavings, leaning a little towards Saint-Julien in style (like the Giscours.) The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gorgeous red berry fruit laced with all spice and cumin, gently fanning out towards the grippy but precise finish that is pure class. This is the best bottle that I have encountered, though the less said about the late Karl Lagerfeld's designed label the better! Drink 2021 - 2040 March 2019

Neal Martin, RobertParker.com 96-98 Points
Tasted at the chateau and UGC. A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot, with 10% vin de presse. The Merlot picked from 22nd to 25th September then 28th September until 1st October. The Cabernet picked 3rd October and from 5th until 11th October (no Cabernet Franc and the Petit Verdot, though ripe, just did not blend well), cropped at 41hl/ha. The nose is well defined, very classic in style with blackberry, black olive, graphite and an intriguing note of woodbines. This is a magnificent Rauzan-Segla, easily the best I have tasted at en primeur. Firstly, it is much more harmonious than usual at this nascent stage, the acidity level is just about perfect, there is a vibrancy that is really enthralling and the poise on the finish ranks alongside that of Chateau Margaux, tasted just before. The finish is very strong, slightly creamy in texture, but also superbly defined and with superb length. Very natural and refine, yet powerful. This may be the best Rauzan Segla that John Kolasa has made. Tasted March 2010

Builds beautifully on the palate. Silky soft and will be approachable relatively young. Juicy finish. This is classic unforced Margaux 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc - April 2010

Vineyard Information

In 1661, Pierre des Mesures de Rauzan, an important wine merchant in Bordeaux, acquired the vineyard and gave his name to the estate. For two centuries generations of the Rauzan family succeeded in the running of the property and the Rauzan-Segla wines grew in reputation in a remarkable way. This Margaux, ranked as a Second Growth, was reborn in 1994 when Chanel became its owner. At that point, everything was set in motion to restore the reputation and rank of this gem of the Margaux appellation. Painstaking soil preparation, pruning, handpicking, sorting of grape are some of the precautionary measures vital for the quality of the wines produced. ©ugcb
