2021 Petit Caro, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and Nicolas Catena, Mendoza

Tasting Notes

"94 Points Decanter Magazine
In the tradition of Bordeaux's grand cru classés, Bodegas Caro produces a second wine that mirrors the house’s core style. A bright ruby-red in hue, the wine offers red and black fruit, blackcurrant, hints of violets, old spice, flowers, and graphite. On the palate, it’s indulgent with a velvety texture and substantial body. The firm tannins promise excellent ageing potential, kept in harmony by the accomplished acidity. Petit Caro 2021 is a blend of 69% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Ancellotta from Luján de Cuyo and Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2028.

Vineyard Information

The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family was born in 1999. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Catena family have an unrivalled knowledge of Malbec and the terroir of Mendoza, couple this with DBR Lafite’s exceptional knowledge of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, and it was clear to see that this partnership would yield magnificent wines. Petit Caro, the latest addition to the range, was first launched with the 2017 vintage and completes the fourth offering from Bodegas Caro.

This is the new 2nd wine of the Caro estate, which shares the same style as its big brother CARO, combing power and elegance. The grapes are sourced from selected plots of old vines in Lujan de Cuyo just outside Mendoza, and also from Altamira, further South, with 12 months aging in French oak barrels. 65% Malbec, 32 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc.
