Gavin Chanin's 2018s are some of his best wines ever. Each wine is on point and exquisite. Readers will note the addition of two new wines: a Syrah and a Reserve Pinot Noir from Durell. As always, the wines are incredibly transparent to site. The Pinots see a bit of whole cluster influence, which adds character without being overly dominant.

The 2018 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard is fabulous. Bright, lifted and beautifully persistent, the Bien Nacido has so much going on. There is a sense of translucency I find absolutely compelling. Bright saline notes give the Bien Nacido energy, tension and drive. This is such a gorgeous wine. Drink 2020 to 2026 Reviewed Aug 2020
Gavin Chanin began his winemaking career as a harvest intern at Au Bon Climat and Qupé, under the tutelage of winemakers Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist, working his way up to assistant winemaker at both labels. Gavin also worked in South Africa and New Zealand and then travelled extensively in Burgundy and Italy before returning to launch Chanin Wine Co. in 2007.
Gavin's focus is entirely on old vine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County where cool coastal winds, diverse marine based soils and a long growing season provide the opportunity to craft exemplary wines. His deft touch delivers approachable wines that are also ageworthy. All of his vineyards are organic or sustainably farmed.
