"A deep garnet core with a mature bricking colour to the rim. There is a lovely sense of evolution as the mature Cabernet sauvignon has developed a minty note, whilst the palate is still full and fleshy (courtesy of the double magnum format) with an excellent fresh lift to the finish. This is a great find, beautiful, mature Cru Bourgeois with melting tannins and soft supple fruit. Perfect current drinking or can be held for 2 to 3 years as it matures further."
Château de Malleret is an historic Haut-Médoc estate that combines a grand Chateau with super quality wine for a surprisingly modest price. The property is three centuries old and until 2006 belonged to the Clossmann family. Today it’s in the capable hands of Bruno Vonderheyden and Florence Deguillaume.
Situated in the commune of Pian-Médoc, close to Margaux, the property is one of the oldest in the region. It's appellation, Haut-Médoc, covers a large swath of Bordeaux Left Bank, including communes away from the Gironde River where soils are a combination of gravel and sand. Malleret has a terroir with a higher percentage of gravel and is planted with 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.
The reason they are so well priced? - These are reduced from their recommended price of £149 due to the fragility of some of the corks. The corks are likely to crumble or break on opening - Slightly annoying but nothing that a quick decant won’t sort out, and with no detriment to the quality of the wine.
