2019 Familia Pacheco Organic Monastrell, Viña Elena, DO Jumilla

Tasting Notes

Patrick Schmitt MW, The Drinks Business, 29th October, 2020
Having sampled around 300 wines across a range of styles and price bands I have picked out just three wines - a white, a red and a sparkling - that I rate as brilliant wine bargains on the market at the moment. I particularly recommend the red because it's a wine with plenty of weight and warmth.

If you are looking for a powerfully-flavoured, balanced and brilliant value red, then consider this particularly attractive fruity sample from Bodegas Viña Elena using old bush vine Monastrell from non-irrigated organic vineyards in the far south of the region. Expect lots of bright, youthful fruits, from blackcurrant to red cherries and fresh plums, even a touch of pepper and voilets too, and some fine, mouth-coating tannins to dry the palate after all the ripe fruit.

Vineyard Information

Widely considered one of the best wineries in Jumilla, Viña Elena is headed up by Elena Pacheco and her three sisters, who are setting the bar incredibly high with the wines they are producing. Monastrell is the predominant variety in the Viña Elena portfolio and flourishes in the nutrient poor, limestone soils. Trained using the traditional Spanish method ´en vaso´, the wines produced by Viña Elena are thoroughly Mediterranean in style, certified organic and offer outstanding value.

Non-irrigated, bush vines, hand harvested, limestone soils, the age of the vines vary from 15 to 40 years old. This wine is made from picking over a combination of different plots located in different sub-zones. Altitude range is between 380 and 760 metres above sea level. All vines are certified organic. All the plots were planted in low density (around 1,400 to 1,600 vines per hectare).
