2011 Gruner Veltliner Terrassen Federspiel, Domäne Wachau, Austria

Tasting Notes

"Bright staw yellow, distinctive and open on the nose with aromas of white pepper, gooseberry and hints of yellow apple. Medium bodied with a crisp acidity, very balanced with a spicy finish. A typical Gruner Veltliner at Federspiel level, subtle and very racy."

Vineyard Information

Domäne Wachau is that rarest of things, a producer of significant volume of wine who also manages to produce some of Austria's finest wines. Situated in the stunning Wachau valley, through which flows the Danube river, Wachau is the coolest vine growing region of Austria and the combination of warm days, cool nights and ancient, rocky soils create wines of precision, minerality and fantastic purity of fruit. While the region is undoubtedly endowed with significant natural advantages to produce fantastic wines, much of it's recent success - including winning 4 trophies at the IWC - must be attributed to the dynamic young team at the winery headed by Roman Horvath MW and the winemaker Heinz Frischengruber. The team have also made a vital contribution to the preservation of this UNESCO world heritage site. The dramatic, steep, terraced vineyards make it a challenging place to grow vines and without their efforts, many of the vine growers would have abandoned the vineyards, losing in the process centuries of tradition as well as many of Austria's top viticultural sites.

Deeply rooted in the Wachau region, Domäne Wachau has close to 440 hectares of vineyards cultivated by the members of this quality-oriented cooperative. That makes up 30 percent of the entire Wachau vineyard area. The Danube rover flows through the stunning Wachau Valley which is the coolest wine growing region of Austria. Loess and Gneiss soils give high levels of minerality and extract.

Vintage Description

The grapes are cultivated in the classic Lenz Moser trellis system with an average yield of 7000 kg/ha. The grapes for this wine were harvested from early until mid October. The modern grape reception system enables the selection of only 100% healthy grape material. Gentle pressing, sedimentation overnight, temperature controlled fermentation with cultured yeast in stainless steel define the vinification process. A moderate reductive treatment guarantees a fresh and fruity, yet well structured wine
