2011 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay, Walker Bay, South Africa

Tasting Notes

"92 Points, Neal Martin (Wine Advocate): "The 2011 Chardonnay sees 8 months in oak, roughly an equal combination of new, second and third fill. It is well defined and understated on the nose, unfurling to reveal fresh lime, red apple and a touch of crisp pear that is very well defined. The palate is effervescent on the entry with a fine thread of acidity that counterbalanced the ripe mango, Clementine and apricot notes that decorate the finish. It has such brightness and clarity on the finish that makes this irresistible. Drink now-2020.""

Vineyard Information

The most southerly vineyards in South Africa belong to Hamilton Russell based in Walker Bay. Only two varieties are grown here: 22 Ha of Pinot Noir vines, and 30 Ha of Chardonnay, in contrast with the usual new world model of growing perhaps 10 different varieties, with no attempt to concentrate on the varieties that best suit the terroir available. Small yields and meticulous vinification ensure the resultant wines are outstanding and Anthony Hamilton-Russell has a justifiable reputation as the Capes Burgundian style specialist. An exceptional new world take on Puligny-Montrachet.
