Tasting Notes

The “Excellence de Sénailhac” is the châteaux’s top red and comes from the best grapes of the vintage. It’s a traditional blend of Bordeaux grape varieties, based on 43% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc, complemented by dashes of Malbec and Petit Verdot. Although it’s graceful and polished, this is still, as one would expect, a firm, full-bodied red. Its black cherry aromas have a spicy edge; in the mouth, it’s rich yet refreshing, with a mix of savoury and fruit flavors that suggest tobacco, dried herbs, cherries and plums.

Property Information

Located on the right bank of the Garonne River, Château Sénailhac is an attractive 18th-century country house with vineyards positioned midway between the Medoc and Saint-Emilion - which also neatly sums up the style of the wine.

Now owned by a local wine merchant, the property once belonged to the Lords of Sénailhac. During the French Revolution, the aristocratic Marguerite de Sénailhac saved the estate from confiscation (and probably her life in the process) by fleeing France and divorcing her husband, who, as a commoner, was allowed to retain possession. Now entirely rejuvenated, the chateau makes excellent wines which bely its humble Bordeaux Superieur status.
