Three times voted the IWSC Italian Winemaker of the year (1997, 2002, 2005), English born John Matta continues to produce wonderful wines from castello Vicchiomaggio, one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in Tuscany.
Whilst several of John's wine include Canaiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon, La Prima is made form 100% Sangiovese. It is aged in barrique (225 litre barrels) for 16-20 months depeneding upon the natural strength of the vintage, and the vineyards from which the fruit is harvested have an average age exceeding 35 years. Vines are pruned hard to deliver low yields of deeply concentrated fruit.
