2011 Max Ferd Richter Mülheimer Sonnelay Riesling 'Zeppelin', Mosel

Tasting Notes

"A little tight/closed on the nose but gradually opens up to reveal fresh lime and mineral notes; just off-dry on the palate - lovely flavours of apple, lime citrus and minerals - very good persistency and excellent length for a wine at this price. An excellent match for Thai/Pan-Asian food. (AI)"

Vineyard Information

Based in the heart of the middle Mosel, Dirk Richter's estate is one of the finest and most highly regarded in Germany.

The winegrowers of Mülheim on the Mosel were able to make the proud boast that their Riesling from the Mülheimer Sonnenlay vineyard was that most frequently poured during the Zeppelin flights during the 1920s and 1930s - From this, Mülheim gained its reputation as Zeppelinwein. Today wines from Mülheim are still marketed with the Art Deco Zeppelin label, a reminder of the days when the Zeppelin crossed the Atlantic and passengers relaxed in its luxurious restaurant sipping this delicious Riesling

Vintage Description

Only the south-western facing slope produces premium wine and is allowed to be called by the single vineyard name, Mülheimer Sonnenlay. This is the largest holding among the vineyards of Max Ferd. Richter. The name Sonnenlay expresses the preconditions for successful Riesling viticulture in the Mosel valley: the sunshine (Sonnen) and slate (Lay is old German for slate) are the basis for the quality of these fragrant, racy and spicy Rieslings.
